At 28 years young, the world’s longest-running musical gets a big-screen adaptation. Expect epic sets and resplendent period detail as seen through the eyes of Tom Hooper, director of THE KING’S SPEECH…but the real revelations here are the songs, which were performed and filmed in “live” takes, and the use of close-ups during these scenes, enhancing the raw, destitute emotion of it all. A sweeping tale of destinies fulfilled and broken, and love lost and found, set during the turbulent years of the French Revolution, Boublil and Schönberg’s musical version of Les Miserables truly deserves to be discovered by a new generation. Andrew Lloyd Webber this is not.
